[September 22, 2016] INTERNATIONAL STUDENT CONFERENCE ON SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT

Background

The term sustainable development was popularized in a report entitled Our Common Future which is published by the World Commission on Environment and Development (Brundtland Commission) in 1987. Since then, sustainability became a principle for many development organizations in the world like United Nations, European Union and several NGOs. Besides, the report also mentioned the sustainability in parallel with the urban planning that fosters land use efficiency and environment protection. This coalition has developed over years in concerns with the climate change and others threats in urban development that formed the concept of sustainable urban development (Delladetsima, 2012).

Sustainable urban development means attaining a balance between human economic, social and cultural development as well as environmental protection and between present and future needs. That comprises equity in development and sectoral actions across space and time and requires an integration of economic, social and environmental approaches towards development.
For that reason, student in the field of urban planning, urban management, urban development need to be well prepared in terms of knowledge, instruments and skills to assess growing problems in urban areas and to develop appropriate solutions from different aspects. These can be acquired not only from lecturers via classes but also from knowledge transfer among students. That is why we are organizing the International Student Conference on Sustainable Urban Development.

The conference is held based on the collaboration between the Sustainable Urban Development master study program (SUD) from Vietnamese-German University (VGU) and Technical University of Darmstadt (TUD) at VGU Binh Duong Campus on September 22, 2016. The participants are bachelor and master students from urban related fields from Vietnamese-German University, Technical University of Darmstadt, Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities and Ton Duc Thang University.

Objectives

The conference aims to provide a space for sharing knowledge, experience and thinking and to foster the coalition among students and young urban practitioners from different backgrounds towards sustainable urban development. Besides, it is also expected to enhance the academic collaboration in the field of sustainable urban development among institutions and individuals.

[September 23, 2016] INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON URBAN FLOODING: POSSIBLE RESEARCH DIRECTIONS AND APPLICATIONS

Background

Climate change is increasingly critical problem in all over the world. Among several impacts of climate change, the increase of rainfalls, both frequency and intensity, and sea level rise have caused flooding in many regions and territories. Due the increasing tide, flooding has become more serious in those areas or cities which have a large river and canal system. In addition to these natural driving forces, flood in urban areas is exacerbated due to rapid urbanization of cities that reduces the water-absorbing area and water-storage capacity of cities due to the encroachment and reclamation of small canals.

Vietnam, with its geographic location and diverse topography, is one of the most hazard-prone countries in Asia-Pacific region in terms of storm and flood. The country has experienced several flood hazards, especially in the coastal cities and heavily-populated cities with poor drainage system. One example is Ho Chi Minh City, the biggest and most crowded city located in the Southern part of Vietnam, where urban inundation has become a part of life in many low-lying areas. The inundation in cities has therefore become one of the hot topics in many conferences, seminars, and workshop, where its causes and impacts have been identified and solutions, both hard- and soft-solutions, have been discussed and proposed from both scientific and administrative perspectives.

In such context of increasing concerns on urban flooding, this conference is organized by Sustainable Urban Development (SUD) master study program of Vietnamese-German University in order to gather the scholars working on urban inundation or related issues for sharing their expertise and experience in the field. It is the second international conference organized by the program in collaboration with German partners from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Technische Universität Darmstadt.

Objectives

The objective of the conference is to enhance multi-disciplinary knowledge sharing as well as networking between scientists, researchers and administrators in the sphere of urban flooding. It is expected that the lessons learnt from international expertise and local experience will help to open up a direction for the continuation of researches on dealing with urban inundation in the context of Vietnam.
