[October 16, 2015] Conference on “SUSTAINING URBAN DEVELOPMENT - APPLICABLE RESEARCH DIRECTIONS”
The projection of continuing fast urbanization growth in Vietnam in the next three decades implies that we will face to a bigger challenge for sustaining our urban development. The scale and intensity of problems as well as new arising ones at present and in the decades to come may not be comparable to what we experienced over past decades. Especially when we are using up our natural resources to become urbanized nation with both productivity and industrialization rate are lower than our neighbor developing countries.
Sustaining the urban development is a common goal, but the conceptualization of challenges might not be the same. In the world of changing, lessons learnt in the past may not be enough to address the near future threats; and experience from abroad may not be applicable to the local context. However, we believe that the better we share and we learn, the better opportunities we can adapt and respond to the future problems.
Under the limited resource constraints, scholars should have higher sense of applicability. There are numerous researches were unsure about their effect and the challenges are not only about what to share, but also how to apply our researches to foster the concrete development context more effectively.
This conference is the first networking activity that develops a network of scholars continually sharing knowledge and experience in sustaining urban development that VGU is a partner. Besides, it creates opportunities to discuss about making researches more applicable in the current development context of Vietnam.
