The Study Preparation Course: Foundation Year

The Foundation Year at VGU is an obligatory part of the Bachelor's program, with a duration of one year, to prepare for the actual program. The intention is to enhance the student's knowledge and ability in the areas of language, subject knowledge and methodological ability. By doing so, it aims to ensure that the student is enabled to join the international bachelor's program. It runs as a full time course and has the following specific goals:

  • Improving the English abilities of all students with the course “English for Academic Purposes“ which is specifically designed for VGU, so they are able to get an IELTS score of at least 6.0. Preparation for the next year with technology and engineering English courses.
  • Reviewing and enhancing previous high school knowledge of mathematics and physics so connections are seen and independent problem solving is developed.
  • Knowledge of software that is relevant for engineering will be expanded.
  • Methodology training develops the students academic ability to successfully study.
  • Students will be prepared for studying in an intercultural environment.

After graduating from the Foundation Year, the students should have the capability to successfully study the Bachelor of Engineering program in English. In case a student fails the IELTS exam (6.0) at the first attempt, it is possible to repeat the Foundation Year.

It is not possible to apply only for the Foundation Year. It is a fixed component of the bachelor's programs at VGU (link). To participate in the Foundation Year, the students have to meet the admissions criteria for the bachelor's program and then apply and register for that.

The Foundation Year is organised by VGU. The English language training is provided by native speakers with extensive experience in Vietnam. Teaching in the other subjects is provided by experienced Vietnamese and German lecturers.
