INTRODUCTION OF IDS

The International Doctoral Seminar (IDS) is organized by traffic and transport institutes of currently five universities: Technische Universität Darmstadt (Germany), Nagoya University (Japan), Tongji University (China), Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (India), and Vietnamese German University (Vietnam). In the IDS, the doctoral students of the respective well acknowledged transport research institutes present their current research and gain feedback in an extended discussion with an international expert audience. The first seminars organized by TU Darmstadt took place in Kleinwalsertal (Austria) with increasing  international participation in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Then, very successful seminars have been held in Gotemba (Japan) 2008, in Darmstadt/Kleinwalsertal (Germany/Austria) 2009, in Shanghai/Wuzhen (China) 2010, in Hochiminh city (Vietnam) 2011, in Darmstadt/Kleinwalsertal (Germany/Austria) 2012.

The IDS aims at giving doctoral candidates the opportunity

  • to present their current state of research work in an international seminar where they get the chance to improve their presentation and discussion skills. This is regarded as an excellent exercise to prepare for the large international events such as World Congress on Transport Research (Rio 2013) or the Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board in Washington DC.
  • to improve and extend their research based on the comments of international well-respected professors and colleagues.
  • to broaden their knowledge by watching and discussing other presentations, with a clear focus on basic research methods and up-to-date research topics.
  • to build a personal and professional network with well-acknowledged scientists from other countries.
  • to test and to improve the English language skills
