Vietnamese-German Transport Research Centre (VGTRC) at VGU has been opened in March 2010 as a joint undertaking of Darmstadt University of Technology (TU Darmstadt), University of Transport and Communication (UTC), and Vietnames-German University (VGU). VGTRC aims to conduct research and development activities in the field of traffic and transport, and to guide researchers towards the doctor degree.
Prof. Boltze (TU Darmstadt) is the director of VGTRC. Dr.-Ing. Khuat Viet Hung, who is currently Dean of the Institute of Transport Planning and Management at UTC, is the co-director of VGTRC. The first VGTRC researchers have been accepted as doctor candidates by the TU Darmstadt Department of Civil Engineering and Geodesy, already. At the moment there are eight doctoral candidates working at TRC, other two applications are currently in progress. After three years, it is intended to have about 15 researchers working at VGTRC.

The VGTRC and its research activities are contributing significantly to the visibility of VGU. This is also supported by a series of symposia organised by the VGTRC. In 2010, the Symposium “The Future of Public Transport” took place on March 5th. The initial Workshop on the “Vietnamese National Standard for Traffic Signals” took place on September 29th, 2011. Furthermore, several doctorial seminars took place in Ho-Chi-Minh-City and Darmstadt. The International Doctoral Seminar (IDS 2011) with participants from Germany, Vietnam, China, Japan and India took place in Hochiminh City on 12th – 17th December 2011. VGTRC was host and organizer of those events.
